A client in Nob Hill told me my invoices looked 'homemade' and she was right
I sent my first invoice to a shop owner off Central about 8 months ago and she paid it, but then she told me straight up that the Word doc I made looked homemade and it made her nervous about hiring me again. I was mad for a day, then I opened the thing and saw she was right, the font was Comic Sans adjacent and I had no invoice number or payment terms at all. So I switched to a free template with Net 14 terms and started putting my business name up top with my EIN, and two of my next three clients paid me without me having to send a single reminder. Freelancers here, what do you actually put on your invoices that makes clients take you seriously?
Same pattern shows up in a ton of small stuff people never think twice about. When I got my kitchen knives sharpened last year, the guy handed me a receipt with a logo and a date and I paid the next guy $40 more just because his paper looked like a real business. People read all these little signals before they even think about the work itself, and a messy invoice tells them you might be messy with everything. Your fix worked because it took away a reason for the client to worry.
