Just realized my AI chatbot was rambling because of a prompt I wrote 6 months ago
I spent two Sundays rebuilding my chat flow and adding filters before I noticed the original system prompt had 3 lines of vague instructions like 'be more conversational' stuffed in there... what tipped me off was comparing my output to a clean test bot on the same API. Has anyone else traced a weird behavior back to one tiny settings line they forgot about?
Oh man I feel this in my soul. I did the exact same thing last year where my bot kept ending every reply with a question and I rebuilt like half my flow trying to fix it. Turned out one line way up top said something like "keep the user talking" and the thing took that literally forever. The worst part is you never look at those old lines because you wrote them when you were still figuring stuff out, so your brain just skips right over them. I finally found mine by pasting my whole prompt into a doc and reading it out loud, which sounds dumb but it forces you to actually see the words. Now I date every line I add and put a quick note on why it's there, because six months from now I will not remember. Anyone who has not done a full prompt audit in a while should really do one.
