The torque wrench paper logs we used in 2005 are all on a tablet now
When I started at the Tulsa shop in 2005, every torque value went on a paper log clipped to the bench, and you signed it with a pen. Now it all goes into a tablet and the signature is a finger swipe, which is faster but I still do not trust it when the wifi drops in the hangar. The switch happened around 2018 when the FAA push for digital records hit our shop, and I have watched three guys get written up over a skipped step that a paper log would have caught. Any of you still keep a backup paper sheet just in case the tablet dies mid job?
You mention the wifi dropping in the hangar, which is the exact thing that worries me. What happens to those finger swipe signatures when the tablet can't reach the server, do they queue up locally or does the whole log just sit there until it reconnects? I ask because if a guy signs off on a step and the tablet eats it, who gets blamed when the FAA pulls records six months later? Three write-ups sounds about right, and I would bet none of those guys would have missed the step if the paper was still clipped to the bench.
