Pulled a panel off the wall and found a live 120V splice, at 11 PM in Toledo

Got a late call about a dead keypad, went to swap the panel battery and found a junction box someone buried in the drywall during a reno. The wires were twisted together with tape, no box, no connector, and hot. I killed the breaker, cleaned it up with wagos, and added a proper cover plate, took about 40 minutes extra. Anyone else run into sketchy hidden splices from old DIY work, and how do you handle it when the homeowner insists it was 'fine for 15 years'?
