Voltage drop on a 500-foot run I measured wrong twice

I was wiring a gate sensor at a warehouse in Columbus and the meter kept showing 9V at the panel end, then I realized I forgot to account for the splice at the junction box, so I re-ran it with 14 gauge instead of 18 and it worked, has anyone else had a similar miss with long low-voltage runs?

Bigger wire fixed the same issue for me on a long sensor run.
