Just learned a mature oak can pull 100+ gallons of water up in a single day and now my head hurts
I was reading through an old research paper from the US Forest Service out of Pennsylvania last night and it said a big white oak can move over 100 gallons of water from the soil to the leaves in one hot day, which is around 800 pounds of water just floating up through the trunk. I always knew trees pulled water but I figured it was maybe 10 or 20 gallons on a good day, not that kind of volume, and now I keep staring at the oaks on my jobs thinking about all that weight moving through xylem under tension. Does anybody actually measure this stuff on their own sites or am I just late to the party on basic tree biology here?
