Rant: I called BS on root flare excavation for 6 years, now I'm not so sure
Back in 2019 a guy at a workshop in Raleigh said 90% of the mature maples he sees are planted too deep, and I figured he was just selling his own service. Then last month I pulled 4 inches of soil off the base of a 20 year old maple in a client's front yard in Durham, and there was the root flare, buried the whole time. The tree had been dropping limbs for 3 years and everyone blamed storms. Now half of me says excavation is real tree care and half of me says we are just fixing bad nursery work from 2005. Where do you all land on this?
