The 3 oaks on my Grand Rapids job went from full crown to sticks in 7 weeks, and the soil was the giveaway
I did a consult on a lawn in Grand Rapids back in June and the homeowner told me the oaks were fine last spring. Went back last week and all 3 had maybe 20 percent canopy left, with the dieback starting at the top and moving down fast. Turned out the crew that did the new patio had graded soil 7 inches up the trunks and the roots were suffocating. If you have a job with fresh grading or a new patio, go look at the root flare before you sign off on anything. Has anyone seen this bounce back once you pull the dirt off, or is the crown mostly a lost cause by then?
