Can we talk about the 14 inch depth marker that cracked my whole dig grid open?
I was digging a test unit at a site outside Tucson and kept hitting sterile dirt around 70cm, so I figured the pit was done. Then a volunteer pointed out the profile wall showed a thin ash lens at 95cm that I had skimmed right past. Turned out that lens was a hearth, and the radiocarbon date came back 800 years older than anything else on the site. I had walked over that spot for 6 days straight thinking I knew the stratigraphy. Has anyone else had a profile wall save a unit they were about to close?
