Did I excavate backwards for 2 years? A grid marker in New Mexico made me question everything
Started field school near Santa Fe back in 2019. They taught us to dig from the south wall north, keeping the baulk on the east side. I did that on every unit for two seasons. Then a visiting professor from Arizona asked why my profile drawings looked mirrored to her team's. Turns out her school digs north to south, baulk on the west. We compared notes, both had published finds, neither is standard across the US. I felt stupid for never asking. Is there actually a consensus in this field or is it just whatever your first crew chief preferred? Anyone else run into this?
