Got yelled at by a ranger for picking up a 'rock' at Mesa Verde

Turns out it was a 800 year old pot sherd, I thought it was just a neat colored stone. Ranger gave me a 20 minute lecture and I had to fill out a form, has anyone else accidentally grabbed something that looked ordinary but was actually ancient?
