Paid $300 for a carbon dating kit, results were basically useless

I got excited about a DIY carbon dating kit from a UK supplier and dropped $300 on it for a small bone fragment I found in a creek bed in Ohio. The instructions were super technical and I messed up the sample prep, probably contaminated it with my own skin oils. They sent back a report full of error margins so wide the date range covered basically the entire Holocene. In the end, I could have just sent it to a university lab for half the cost and proper guidance. Has anyone else tried these mail-in kits or is there a better budget route for hobbyists?
