The parking garage exit line taught me a timing trick

Last Tuesday I sat in line for 20 minutes to get out of a downtown garage after a concert. The guy ahead of me pulled out his phone and paid while still parked, then cruised through the gate without stopping. I always wait until I reach the machine, which adds a minute per car in front of me. Now I pay the second I get in my car before even starting the engine. Has anyone else found a small habit like this that saves time in the worst spots? I figure I wasted roughly 40 hours a year just sitting in those exit lines.
