Warning: I tried the 5 minute rule on my messy garage and it backfired
Last Saturday I set a timer for 5 minutes and said I'd just pick up whatever I could in my garage. Instead of cleaning, I spent the whole time moving one box of old cables from shelf to shelf. I learned my real problem is decisions, not time, so now I sort into keep, donate, and toss piles first. What small trick actually got you started on a mess you'd been avoiding?
What if you take the decision part even further and set the timer just for sorting, not cleaning? Give yourself 5 minutes to walk around with three boxes and only touch things to toss them in keep, donate, or toss. No moving boxes between shelves, no organizing, just making the call. Then the actual cleaning is a separate 5 minute round and your hands already know where stuff goes. The decision pile is the real bottleneck, so breaking it into its own step keeps you from stalling on the shelf shuffle.
