A guy at the Grand Rapids star party said my Milky Way shots looked like orange soup, so I changed one thing
I brought my camera and a cheap tripod to a dark site near Grand Rapids about 5 months ago and proudly showed my best shot to some random guy with a big scope. He looked at it for two seconds and said the sky looked like orange soup. Turns out I was shooting at ISO 6400 with 45 second exposures, which cooked the whole frame with light pollution. I dropped to ISO 1600, cut my exposures to 15 seconds, and stacked 40 frames in free software instead of trusting one shot. My next Milky Way photo from the same spot actually showed dust lanes. Anyone else get roasted by a stranger at a star party and end up thanking them later?
A buddy of mine got the same treatment at a dark site last summer, some guy walked by and told him his wide field shot was all noise and haze. He switched from one long exposure to stacking a bunch of shorter ones at lower ISO and suddenly the dust lanes popped out. Sometimes the rude guy with the big scope is the most helpful person there.
