That one time a stranger corrected my pronunciation and I still think about it

I was standing in line at the Marietta Diner around 11pm last month, waiting on a to-go order, and this older guy behind me heard me say "Ponce de Leon" with the wrong accent. He tapped my shoulder and said, "It's PONCE day lay-OWN, not PONCE dee LEE-on. You live here, sound like it." I felt my face go red, but he wasn't mean about it. He just laughed and told me he's been here since 1987 and still hears transplants butcher it daily. That got me thinking, do locals actually care about this stuff or is it just a pet peeve for some? I've been saying it wrong for 2 years and nobody ever said anything until that random guy. Would you correct a stranger on something like that or just let it slide? Has anyone else had a moment where a local set you straight on some ATL thing and it stuck with you?
