Am I the only one who thinks replacing brake fluid on a schedule is mostly a waste of money?
I pulled the maintenance log off a 2011 Corolla in my bay down here in Tucson and it showed the brake fluid was flushed every 30k miles like clockwork, and the master cylinder still failed at 118k. Then I looked at my own truck, 190k on the original fluid, and the pedal feels fine and the fluid is only slightly dark. I get why the service writers push it, it is an easy upsell, but the 2 year rule people repeat online seems way too aggressive for a daily driver in a dry climate. Moisture test strips are cheap and I have never seen one hit 3 percent on a sealed system that was not already leaking somewhere. What actually kills these systems is neglected calipers and rubber lines, not the fluid sitting in the reservoir. Anyone here actually seen a brake failure they could trace back to old fluid and nothing else?
