I put ATF in a power steering pump to stop a whine, and the rack blew 3 days later
Customer had a 2011 CR-V with 148k on it whining every cold start at my shop in Reno, so I dumped half a quart of Dexron in the reservoir and told him it would quiet down. Three days later he calls me from a parking lot off Virginia Street with fluid pouring out of both rack boots, and it took a $600 used rack plus labor to make it right. Is it worth trying a fluid swap on a noisy pump anymore, or do you just tell them to replace it and eat the argument?
