Showerthought: I stopped turning rotors on every brake job 5 years ago and my comeback rate went down, not up
I used to turn every rotor that walked in the door, that was just how I got taught back at the shop in Bakersfield in the 90s. About 5 years ago I got lazy on a Friday, slammed pads on a Camry with 90k miles without touching the rotors, and figured I'd see that car back within a month. Never saw it again. So I started paying attention, and over about 200 brake jobs I tracked comebacks on a notepad in my box, and the turned ones actually came back slightly more often for noise and pedal pulse. My theory is thin rotors plus new pads equals more heat and warping, but I could be wrong. Thing is, rotor prices dropped so much that turning them barely saves the customer money anymore, like $15 a side. Now I measure every rotor, and if it is above spec with no deep grooves, I leave it alone and just scuff it with a Roloc disc. Any of you old timers still turning every single one, or did you switch too?
