I keep hearing guys say wire chafing is just a normal wear item you deal with at heavy checks. But at my last shop in Wichita, we started doing a 15 minute inspection on the main landing gear harness every 200 flight hours. In the first 6 months, we found 11 chafe spots before they wore through the insulation. Before that, we were replacing entire harnesses every 2 to 3 years because they'd short out and take down a whole system. The difference was night and day, and it cost us maybe 4 man hours a month. Now I'm at a new place and they say that's overkill. Has anyone else seen a simple habit like that save them from a big headache down the road?
