Just realized the trail crew guys at Shenandoah were right about ditching my trekking poles on the descent
I always figured poles were safer on steep downhill until a ridgerunner near Marys Rock said they slow you down more than they save your knees, and after trying it on a 2,200 foot drop I actually agree with him. My quads were toast either way but I moved way faster and never once caught a tip in a rock. Anyone else switch to bare hands for descents or am I the only one who waited this long to try it?
Watched a guy eat it hard on Old Rag last fall when his pole wedged between two rocks and he went over the side of the trail. Stuck to bare hands ever since and my only regret is not ditching them sooner.
