That shortcut on the JMT nearly got me lost in a snowfield
Last August I was hiking the John Muir Trail near Evolution Lake and I decided to cut across a snowfield instead of sticking to the switchbacks. It looked fine from above but the snow was slick and I slid about 40 feet before I caught a rock. Took me an hour to get back on track and I burned way more energy than the switchbacks would've cost. I see people do this all the time on steep passes, anyone else have a close call from skipping the marked route?
