Hot take: comb guards beat freehanding for beginners and it's not even close
I spent my first 6 months trying to freehand every taper and my fades looked like stairs. Bought a $25 set of magnetic guards last week and my third cut with them was cleaner than anything I did by hand. Any of you still skip guards on purpose, or is that just a bad habit people pick up from YouTube?
Did you also spend those 6 months telling yourself you were "building the skill" while people quietly avoided your chair? I mean, I did the same thing, watched like 40 hours of YouTube fades and thought I was too good for guards. Then I actually looked at the back of my head in a mirror and it looked like a barcode. Guard sets are just a cheat code for not slicing your friend's ear off, and there's no shame in that. Freehanding is a skill you pick up later once your hands stop shaking, not a personality test.
