Stop letting slow clients pick the invoice date and watch your cash flow fix itself
I run a two person web shop out of Sacramento and for two years I let clients tell me to invoice them at the end of the month, or after their next board meeting, or whatever. Then last March I had $11,400 tied up with three clients who all pushed their invoice dates past 45 days, and I was putting gas on a credit card to get to a job site. The thing nobody tells you is the invoice date isn't a courtesy you give the client, it's the start of the clock, and if they pick it they're basically picking when you get paid. So I changed one thing. The day the work goes live or the deliverable ships, the invoice goes out that same afternoon, no asking, no waiting, and I put the due date right on the front instead of hiding it in the terms. Two of those three slow clients paid inside a week because the clock was already running and they weren't the ones holding the stopwatch. Has anyone else tried just sending it the day you finish instead of waiting for their billing cycle, or does that burn bridges for you?
