I was watching shows wrong for years until my friend pointed out one thing
I used to always watch a new show while scrolling on my phone, thinking I could follow along. Then my buddy came over to watch the new season of 'Shrinking' and after twenty minutes he asked, 'Did you catch why that joke was funny?' I had to admit I missed it because I was looking at my screen. Now I put my phone in another room when I start something, and I actually remember the plot. Anyone else have a rule to stop from getting distracted?

My husband and I have a no-phone rule for the first episode of any new show. We started it after we completely missed a key twist in the first episode of "Severance" because we were both on our laptops. Now we just leave them in the kitchen. It sounds strict, but it makes watching feel like an actual event, not just background noise. I catch way more of the little details in the set design and the actor's expressions that way.

Seems a bit much for just a tv show.

Wish I had that kind of discipline. My weird angle is that it changes how you hear the music and sound design, which is half the story sometimes. You don't realize how much mood comes from the score until you're not also hearing a text alert. Makes the whole thing feel heavier, like you're in the room with the characters. It turns a lazy watch into something that actually sticks with you.
