Met a retired boilermaker at the diner, his 2 questions made me rethink my routine

Last Tuesday I'm grabbing eggs before a job and this old guy sees my hoodie, starts talking. He asks how many weld passes I do on a 2-inch nozzle and then asks why, not just what. I rattled off my usual number and he said, that's what everyone says, but do you actually check the puddle before the third pass. Honestly caught me off guard because I've been doing this 6 years and just follow what I was taught. I went back to the shop and tried his way on a test piece, slower but cleaner. Anyone else had an old timer point out something so basic that you felt dumb for not noticing it sooner?

Did you check if that slower pace changes your filler rod angle too?
