Root pass keeps blowing out on schedule 80, what am I missing?
Had a 6 inch schedule 80 carbon steel joint fail on me twice this week in the shop. First time I figured it was my amperage, so I dropped it from 95 to 85 and slowed my travel speed, but it still blew out on the second pass. I'm running 6010 with a 3/32 rod, and the gap was set at 3/16 like the foreman said. The metal is clean, no rust or moisture, but I keep getting that keyhole effect that just opens up too wide. Anyone else run into this on thicker pipe, and did you switch to a different root gap or land size?
