That expansion joint trick cost me a whole shift in Chattanooga
Ran into a boiler that kept eating its refractory around the expansion joints. Took me 11 hours to figure out the gap was spec'd for cold temps, not the 400 degree operating range. Anyone else measure those gaps hot instead of trusting the blueprint?

Did you check if the boiler was even getting hot enough to reach that 400 degree mark? Sometimes the burner cycles off early and the refractory sees way less heat than you think. I had a unit once where the gap looked wrong on paper but the real issue was a cracked liner letting cold air in and shifting everything. That threw off my measurements for a whole day, so now I always tape a temp gauge right on the joint and watch it through a full cycle before I trust any numbers. Blueprints are a starting point, but they don't account for how the actual fire moves in there.
