Am I the only one tired of the 'unreliable narrator' hot take in every mystery book club pick?
Last month's pick at our library group had everyone praising the twisty narrator, but I actually checked out after chapter 4 because the voice felt forced, not clever. Is there a line between a good unreliable narrator and one that just makes the plot confusing for the sake of it, or am I missing something?

Right there with you. The last book club pick here had everyone swooning over the narrator, but I just got bored. A good twist should make you rethink what you read, not make you wanna flip back to page one every two chapters. Yours sounds like it was trying too hard to be clever. It’s like some authors forget the story matters more than the trick. Does that make us the picky ones, or are people just scared to say the emperor has no clothes?
