Can we talk about how I was rounding spines the hard way for 2 years?
Last Tuesday I was at my bench in Portland and an old binder named Sal stopped by to drop off some signatures. He watched me round a spine and said "you're fighting the paper, not working with it." I had been hammering the whole text block from the center outward, which was making the shoulder lumpy and taking me almost 40 minutes per book. He showed me to start at the head and tail and just work inward with lighter taps, and the whole thing took 12 minutes with a cleaner curve. I felt pretty dumb standing there with my hammer. Now I'm wondering how many other steps I've been muscling through instead of letting the paper do the work. What's the one technique you wish someone had corrected for you early on?
