I thought the Japanese screw punch was just hype, then I punched 340 holes in one sitting
For years I watched people on here talk up the Japanese screw punch and I figured it was just another tool people buy to feel fancy, since my awl and a block of beeswax had worked fine on every journal I built since 2016. Last month I had a rush order for a guy in Sacramento, 20 leather journals for his crew, and each signature needed 5 holes through 90 lb hide, which is around 340 punches if my math is right. My wrist gave out somewhere around journal nine and I caved and borrowed one from a bindery friend in Oakland. It cut through that leather like it was cardstock, no tearing, no wobble, and the holes lined up so clean my stitching actually went faster than my old setup. I still use the awl for small runs because I like the feel of it, but for anything over a few books that punch stays on the bench now. What got you all to switch to one, or am I late to a party that started a decade ago?
