My first leather spine had a hidden flaw I never checked

I spent 6 months binding journals with a grain direction I thought was right. A customer in Portland brought back a book where the leather split clean down the hinge, and I had no answer. That's when I looked closer and realized the grain ran the wrong way across the spine the whole time. Anyone else skip that step early on and pay for it later?

Cracked up reading this because I once bound an entire batch of sketchbooks with the grain sideways and only noticed when every single one refused to lay flat, so welcome to the club, friend. At least your customer got a clean split, mine just sat there looking like a sad accordion.
