Warning: dropped $90 on a variegated monstera node that rotted in 5 days
Bought a single node off a seller in Tampa back in March, paid $90 plus $15 for shipping. It showed up wrapped in damp sphagnum with no roots, and against my better judgment I potted it straight into soil instead of water propping it first. Five days later the stem was mushy and black at the base, and the leaf fell off when I barely touched it. Now I only buy rooted plants in person, even if it means waiting for the local plant swap in June. Has anyone gotten a bare node to actually root, or is that just a gamble people take?

The "potted it straight into soil" part is really what got you, not the bare node itself. Nodes root fine for tons of people, but you have to treat that cut end like an open wound, let it callous for a day or two, then prop in water or perlite so you can actually see what's happening. Damp sphagnum shipped in a box is already a rot risk before it even reaches you, so going straight to wet soil on top of that is asking for mush. I've rooted plenty of single nodes in perlite with a ziplock tent over them, just be patient and keep the stem dry.
