I quit buying chicken breasts and switched to whole birds, and my grocery bill went from $95 a week to $61
For a long time I was that person grabbing the family pack of boneless skinless breasts at Kroger every Sunday without even looking at the price. Last March my cousin from Toledo stayed with us for two weeks and watched me blow $95 on one grocery run, and she just pointed at the whole chickens sitting right there for $1.29 a pound. I finally tried it and now I roast two birds on Sunday, pull the meat for tacos and casseroles, then boil the bones with carrot tops and onion skins for stock that I freeze in old yogurt tubs. The breast pack was $4.99 a pound, the whole bird is $7 or $8 total and feeds us for three dinners plus lunch. Yes it takes an extra 20 minutes of picking meat off the carcass, but I just do it while a podcast plays and it flies by. I also stopped buying the tubs of stock which were running me $3.50 each, so that alone saved another $14 a month. Has anyone else made the switch to whole chickens, and do you bother cutting them up raw or just roast the whole thing like I do?
