Update: I did the math on a $22 hostel dorm vs a $95 motel in Lisbon and picked wrong
Two weeks ago in Lisbon I stood in a hostel lobby at 11pm trying to decide between a 6 bed dorm for 22 euro a night or a private motel room near the airport for 95. I went with the dorm to stretch my 400 euro budget across 8 days. Big mistake. The guy in bunk 3 snored like a chainsaw and someone kept flicking the lights on at 3am, so I got maybe 3 hours of sleep and burned two full days being useless. My buddy says dorms are the only way to travel cheap and I should just buy earplugs and deal with it. I say paying extra for sleep is worth it when you only have a week. Where do you all draw the line on hostel dorms versus a cheap private room?
