A supplier in Detroit got me to change my whole mind about invoicing family
I used to do work for family and friends all the time and just never send a bill, because I figured that was what you do. Six months ago my cousin asked me to fix up his rental unit in Detroit, and I spent about 30 hours and $400 on materials getting it ready. When I handed him a receipt anyway, he looked at me weird and said 'why are you giving me this, we're family.' I tried to explain that this is my job and he just shook his head, so I let it go. Two months later his tenant moved out and he asked me to do it all again, for free, like the first time set the rule. I finally sat down and told him I couldn't do it anymore, and it was one of the hardest things I've done as a business owner. Has anyone else had to draw that line with family, and how did you say it without blowing up the relationship?
