Dropped $340 on a used commercial meat grinder at a flea market in Tulsa, and it barely chewed a single pork butt
Found a Hobart grinder at a flea market outside Tulsa two months back and the guy swore it ran like new, so I handed over $340 cash without testing it. Got it home and the auger jammed on my first pork butt, and a repair shop quoted me $280 just to look at the gearbox. Turns out the motor was shot and I basically bought a 60 pound paperweight. What do you all check before buying used gear at a flea market?

My uncle ran a small butcher shop for years and he always said bring a piece of meat with you when you buy used. He would toss a chunk of pork fat through the feed tube right there in the parking lot, just to hear the motor pull without stalling. Also check the auger for wobble by hand, a worn bushing will let it rock side to side. If the seller won't let you run it for even ten seconds, walk away. For $340 you could have put that money toward a new one and saved the headache.
