Am I the only one who keeps a scrap bin for practice cuts before touching the good oak?
Last Tuesday I was building a small walnut vanity for a guy in Bend, Oregon, and right before I made the rail cuts I grabbed a chunk of scrap pine from my bin and ran the whole setup on it first. That pine piece caught a tear-out at the bottom edge of the profile bit, and it saved me from wrecking a $90 board of walnut. The trick is I mark every scrap with the exact bit height and speed setting in pencil, so 6 months later I can grab the same scrap and know what worked. My old boss in Portland used to yell at me for wasting time on practice cuts, but it has saved me at least 8 boards in the last year. Now the bin lives right under the table saw and I never cut a finished piece cold. Does anyone else keep a labeled scrap pile like this, or do you just run the real stock and hope for the best?
