A splicer in Tulsa showed me his 40 year old fusion splicer and I finally get why fiber guys brag
I was at a fiber training day in Tulsa back in March and an old splicer pulled out a machine from 1984 that still held a 0.02 dB loss on single mode, which made me rethink how much I trust my newer gear, so now I want to know if anyone else keeps a backup splicer that old around.
Old gear that still works is worth its weight in gold, no question. Keeping a backup splicer around is smart but you have to actually run it now and then or the arc chamber and electrodes will sit and go bad on you. In my experience the old Sumitomo and Fujikura units from the 80s and 90s hold up great as long as you keep them clean and dry, but good luck finding parts when something finally gives out. I keep one older machine in the truck as a just in case, and it has saved me more than once when the new one threw an error mid job. Your mileage may vary depending on how much you want to spend keeping two machines calibrated, but for me it pays off.
