My old foreman told me to stop taping every drop, and it took losing a job in Tulsa to get it
Guy who trained me back in 2019 always said tape is cheap and callbacks are not, so I taped every single drop on every job for 5 years. Last Tuesday a commercial client in Tulsa told me my quote was $340 higher than the other bid and flat out asked why, and I could not give him a real answer. My old foreman called me that night for something else and when I told him he just laughed and said he stopped taping the easy runs after 15 years because the tape itself was never the problem, bad fittings were. I went back through my last 20 jobs and found 3 callbacks, all of them from bad crimps, not one from a drop I left untaped. Now I only tape in attics and crawls and I am curious if anyone else out there still tapes everything out of habit or if you all figured this out way before me.
I used to be the guy who taped every single drop too, mostly because that's how I was taught and I never stopped to question it. Reading your post made me actually look at my own callbacks, and same deal, the leaks were always bad crimps or loose fittings, not the tape. I still tape in attics and crawls like you said, but on a clean run in a dry wall I skip it now.
