Why does nobody warn you about apartment MDU closets full of 20 year old splitters
Last Tuesday I was at a 24 unit building in south Austin. New install, tenant says her internet keeps dropping. I get to the closet on the 2nd floor and it's a rat nest. 3 splitters daisy chained, one of them stamped 2003, coax stapled so tight it's pinched flat. Somebody before me just kept adding to it instead of fixing it.
Spent 2 hours there redoing 6 drops off one 8 way. Signals went from 41 down to 34 on the return. Tenant sent a thank you card to the office. Nobody at my shop cares because it ate my whole afternoon route.
What do you all do when you open a closet and it's beyond saving? Do you document it with pics and let the office eat the callback, or just fix what you can and move on?
I once spent 45 minutes untangling a closet just to find out the "signal issue" was a dead 9v battery in the tenant's garage door opener. You did the right thing though, 41 to 34 on the return is not nothing. I usually snap pics for the office and fix what I can, because fighting a 2003 splitter might actually be my most stable relationship.
