Heat gun versus soldering iron for flex cable repair, which is actually worth it?

I spent 3 hours reworking a Pentax K1000 light meter flex cable last Tuesday. Heat gun worked fine but nearly melted a plastic bracket, soldering iron was slower yet cleaner on the pins. Both got the job done but the iron needed way more finesse with old brittle solder. Has anyone else noticed heat guns cause more collateral damage on vintage gear, or am I just rushing the prep?
