With a bag of zip ties and a prayer" is how half the houses on my street are held together. My neighbor tried that on his porch railing last summer. It held for about a month before the whole section sagged. He ended up having to sister in a new 4x4 post anyway.

My old apartment complex was full of these quick fixes. You start with one temporary repair, then it just becomes a permanent part of the building. It's a weird way things slowly fall apart.
