Unpopular opinion: that $400 router table was the best money I ever spent
I build cabinets in a two car garage in Boise, and three months ago I finally bought a decent router table after using a clamped piece of plywood for two years. It cost me around $400 with the lift and fence, and the first week I was mad at myself for spending that much on something I thought I could build for $50. But then I ran 60 feet of shaker rail and stile in one afternoon instead of fighting tearout and burning every piece on the old setup. Now I keep hearing guys say you can get the same results with a homemade jig and a steady hand, and honestly I don't buy it for any kind of production work. If you've gone both ways on this, did the store bought table actually make you money back, or did you wish you'd kept the shop built one?
