Guy in Boise handed me a scrap of carpet pad and changed how I stretch every room
Was doing a 3 room job in Boise back in April, older house, 40 oz berber, and the homeowner's brother was hanging around watching me work. He used to install back in the 80s. Didn't say much for an hour, then he picked up a scrap of 8 lb pad off my drop cloth and said "you feel that? That's your stretch right there." Told me he always cut his pad 2 inches shy of the tackstrip so the carpet grabs pad and tack instead of just tack. I'd been butting pad tight to strip for 6 years. Tried it on the next room, power stretcher bit into the carpet cleaner and the corners pulled tight with no claw marks. Did the rest of the house that way. Went back and redid my own living room after that. Whole thing cost me nothing but listening for 5 minutes to a guy in a Bass Pro hat. Curious if anyone else leaves a gap at the strip or if this is just an old school trick that died out.
