Spent $260 on a carpet seam iron and I'm still not sure if it saved me or scammed me
I picked up a used seam iron off a guy in Fresno for $260 when my old one quit mid-job on a 40 yard stretch of berber. Some guys in my area swear you can get the same seam with a cheap iron and a lot of patience, but I had a bedroom seam bubble up two weeks later that I blamed on my old setup. Other installers I talk to say the iron is where you should put your money since heat and pressure make or break the seam, while a few say technique matters way more than the tool. I'm honestly torn on whether the upgrade actually fixed my seams or if I just got better at stretching. What did you spend on your seam iron and did it ever actually change your results?
What did your old iron actually do wrong though, was it temp control drifting or just not enough weight to really sink into the berber? Asking because berber is a whole different animal with seams, that backing fights you the whole way and I've seen guys blame the iron when the real problem was not enough heat getting down into that thick backing. If the new one fixed that bedroom bubble, then the tool mattered, but you also changed two things at once with the stretch and the iron so how do you know which one did it? Did you ever run the cheap iron on a scrap piece next to the new one and compare, or are you just going off how the finished seams feel now?
