Why does nobody talk about how much carpet backing varies by batch?
I was at a supplier training day in Dallas back in March and the rep pulled up a chart showing that backing thickness can swing by almost 15 percent between dye lots of the same style. That number floored me because I have blamed myself for wrinkles and ripples more than once when the real problem was the roll itself. Last month I did a 40 yard stretch in a rental in Plano and the second roll was so stiff it fought the power stretcher the entire way. I started measuring backing with a cheap caliper before I even cut and now I note the batch number on my work order. It takes two minutes and has saved me at least one callback. Has anyone else run into a bad batch that made you look like the bad guy?
