A client told me my invoices were too confusing to pay
They said the line items were vague, like 'project work' for $2,500, and they'd just set it aside. Now I break everything down, like 'framing - 35 hours' and 'material delivery fee'. Do you think super detailed invoices get paid faster, or do they just give clients more stuff to argue about?

Set it aside" for a $2,500 line? That's wild.

That "checks clear" part is so real. I had a client years ago who'd send back edits on a printed invoice, like circling the word "consulting" and writing "for what?" in red pen. I started adding tiny footnotes, like "1.5 hrs: discussed logo options and competitor colors." Felt silly, but the questions stopped.

My invoices used to be so vague I'd get confused trying to read them myself. Now they're a novel, but at least the checks clear.
