Rant: breaking a brush rod on a 40 foot run taught me to stop forcing it from one spot
Spent the first 6 years of sweeping trying to muscle the whole flue clean from the base, and after snapping a rod mid-job in a house off Route 9 and having to fish the bristles out with a magnet, I switched to working it in short sections from the top down and now I want to know if anyone else here still does the whole run in one pass or if that is just something we all quietly stopped doing.
The part about fishing bristles out with a magnet off Route 9 made me laugh, but I don't buy that one pass from the base is always wrong. On a straight flue with no offsets, running the whole thing from the bottom works fine and it's faster, you just have to let the rod do the work and not horseman it. Where people get in trouble is bends and shelves, and that's when you break rods, not because of the length of the run. I do bottom up on clean straight shots and switch to sections the second I feel it bind.
