Rant: My mentor kept telling me my rods were too clean, and it finally clicked on a soot job in Aurora
I always scrubbed my rods spotless after every job because I figured a dirty tool was a sloppy tool. Then Walt, who has been sweeping for 27 years, grabbed one of my rods at a job in Aurora last Tuesday and pointed at the dry grit caked in the threads. He pointed out that grit works its way into the joints and chews them up faster than soot ever would, so now I just wipe them down and leave a little film. Turns out I was wearing out $200 worth of rods a year trying to look neat. Any of you keep a certain amount of grime on your gear on purpose?
